The Competitive Intelligence Specialist will support firm strategy, business development, and client relationship management efforts through formulating and executing complex research in response to inquiries from various departments, including marketing, senior management, and practicing attorneys. The Specialist will use an extensive collection of internal and external resources to gather, filter, synthesize, organize, package, and deliver business and competitive intelligence that influences the firmβs business development, talent recruitment, and growth initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor and analyze the competitive legal environment, as well as emerging trends in the legal industry, to provide proactive business insights.
Plan and execute both quick reference and in-depth research on specific companies, individuals, industries, business and corporate activities, and law firm marketing and business development trends and initiatives.
Lead and organize comprehensive research projects to support firm-wide strategic planning and growth initiatives, including coordinating with various departments, defining research objectives, and ensuring effective and efficient execution of these projects.
Create detailed strategies and employ relevant analytical methods for specific intelligence topics of significant importance to the firm, including identifying key intelligence topics, determining the best methods for data gathering and analysis, and formulating actionable plans based on the results of the analysis.
Analyze and create reports using internal business intelligence data on clients, matters and industries served to uncover trends and identify opportunities.
Synthesize relevant information needed for high-level and business development decision-making, and succinctly communicate research findings in a clear and concise manner, with an emphasis on written communication.
Provide training and guidance to business development staff on resources and methodologies to support them in execution of their responsibilities.
Identify new firm resources and maximize existing tools within the Marketing & Business Development department.
Comply with all ethical standards and the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 in all data collection activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Deep knowledge of competitive intelligence principles, trends, and best practices, with demonstrated success applying these to work with law firms or corporate entities.
Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (proficient with pivot tables and formulas such as VLOOKUP).
Proficiency with data visualization and data visualization software (Tableau and Power BI) beneficial.
Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple projects under pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
Ability to think analytically and creatively and determine how to implement relevant solutions practically.
Ability to synthesize and distill information from diverse sources and deliver to internal and external customers in a user-friendly format.
Excellent interpersonal and customer-service skills, with the ability to build trust and maximize relationships, while respecting confidentiality.
Ability to function independently and effectively as part of a collaborative team.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's in business, finance, or marketing.
Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience
Demonstrated success in leading teams beneficial.
Experience in an Am Law 100 law firm is preferred.
Experience researching across a broad range of industries including legal services, financial services, private equity, technology, energy, life sciences and real estate.
Subject matter expert with online resources and corporate databases such as Westlaw, Capital IQ, Manzama, Leopard Solutions, ALM Legal Compass, PitchBook, Lex Machina; ability to quickly develop proficiency with new tools.
