Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, Inc. (CCLA) established in 2003 is a Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funded, non-profit organization. CCLA provides free civil legal services to low-income and otherwise eligible residents of Broward County and is located in Plantation, Florida, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Our mission is to provide equal justice to underserved communities through quality and innovative free civil legal aid. CCLA provides legal advocacy for marginalized individuals in our community, helping thousands of economically disadvantaged residents to gain greater access to justice and much-needed legal assistance to remove barriers to a healthy and stable life.
CCLA provides legal assistance in the areas of Family Law & Victims of Crime, Economic Advocacy & Community Health (public benefits), and Senior Law for people age 60 and older. CCLA is currently seeking a Controller to join the CCLA team! The Controller is responsible for assisting the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with all strategic and operational financial management, including budget oversight, fiscal and grant compliance, cost-benefit analysis, and forecasting. Recommends and implements high-level system improvements as needed. Provides financial insights and guidance to the CFO and Management team, addressing critical financial and budgeting issues.
Position Duties:
· Oversees financial and operational strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
· Assists with the month-end close process, including preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
· Maintains and reconciles general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
· Assists to ensure ongoing alignment between financial, operational, and programmatic objectives.
· Provides regular reports, and keeps the CFO informed of CCLA’s finances and the operation and progress of compliance efforts.
· Assists the CFO in setting up the annual budget and monitoring its implementation.
· Responsible for the overall operation of CCLA accounting, financial, and grant systems.
· Oversees budgeting, budget implementation, tracking, and reconciliation to monitor progress and present status reports and narratives including financial metrics both internally and externally.
· Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements, and audit requirements. Maintains internal control safeguards and coordinates all audit activities.
· Understands and monitors adherence to accounting rules and regulations, financial regulations of the Legal Services Corporation, and all other applicable regulations and rules for grants.
· Manage cash flow and forecasting to ensure financial stability and sustainability.
· Assists with annual audit process and resolves queries of statutory auditors.
Team Management & Collaboration
· Mentors and develops the fiscal and compliance team, managing work allocation, training, performance evaluation, and fostering a dynamic team environment.
· Collaborates with the Management Team and program staff to ensure alignment between financial, operational, and programmatic objectives.
· Performs all other duties as assigned and/or requested by Executive Director, Management Team, Supervisors, or as required by grant(s).
Position Requirements:
· Bachelor’s Degree required. CPA and MBA preferred.
· Experience managing the finance (accounting, budgeting, control and reporting) and compliance functions within a diverse division-based entity.
· A hands-on, fully engaged, and roll-up-your-sleeves executive with integrity and a desire to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
· Excellent and transparent written and oral communicator; able to engage in difficult conversations with sensitivity and thoughtfulness.
· Strong analytical skills.
· Deep understanding of and experience with financial statements.
· Must have a thorough understanding of cost accounting, Legal Services Corporation’s allocation methods, and best practices to ensure proper contract costing.
· An ability to communicate complex and nuanced financial information to non-financial professionals.
