OVERVIEW:
The goal of CORAL San José is to improve academic achievement in an after-school setting. Serving twenty schools throughout San José, CORAL will provide high quality literacy support and project-based learning activities linked to classroom curricula and California State Standards. CORAL seeks to strengthen children’s foundation of basic skills, while providing them with a rich and high quality literacy and enrichment curriculum.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Site Manager, the CORAL Support Staff (CSS) will be responsible for the supervision and safety of school age children. The CSS will provide instruction to individual (1-on-1) or small groups of students in an assigned CORAL classroom. Will monitor and report students’ progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and support duties related to the after school classroom activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the CASI in providing instruction to students in an assigned after school classroom.
- Assist in teach, direct and supervise school age children.
- Provide support to the CASI by setting up work areas, display and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials; assist with the day in and day out working with children that need support one on one.
- Assist students with various self-help skills.
- Maintain daily attendance.
- Maintain data entry requirements.
- Conduct home visits if needed.
- Involve children in all program activities, including outside play.
- Develop age appropriate programming for children.
- Responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of the children at all times.
- Must be an active participant and a positive role model to children.
- Exhibit courteous and helpful behavior to children, staff, parents/guardians, school personnel, agency representatives, and the general public.
- Report to the Site Manager any behavioral concerns and/or incidents involving the children in the program.
- Attend all staff meetings and professional development trainings.
- Responsible for all equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of program areas.
- Carry out all policies of the site, agency, and overall San Jose CORAL goals and mission.
- Perform all other duties as required by the CORAL.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED; or AA or a minimum of 48 completed college units; or
- Must take paraprofessional exam if less than 48 completed college credits; OR
- BA in Education or related field or equivalent work experience
- Qualifications for an instructional aide according to the LEA policy
- Must have a minimum of two years experience working with children
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- The qualified applicant will possess general knowledge in these areas:
- Common Core
- Balanced literacy
- Lesson planning and implementation
- Classroom management
- Academic Tutoring
- Safety / Risk Management in a child centered program
- Must have knowledge of working in racially diverse communities, under performing schools, low-socio economic areas.
- Must acquire CPR and First Aid training.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and do exercise with the students outside.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Criminal background check via livescan fingerprint.
- Must have TB test performed and submit results.
- Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster status.
- Automobile, valid driver’s license and auto insurance per agency policy; or have access to reliable transportation
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work will be conducted in a classroom setting on the assigned school site.
- Activities will be indoors and/or outdoors.
HOURS AND OTHER CONDITIONS:
- Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Individuals in this position will be assigned to a school site and must follow school policies and procedures, as well as agency policies and procedures.
- Must be available during CORAL program hours 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (schedule varies by school site); up to 24 scheduled hours per week.
