The Vance Center advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession.  The Vance Center is a unique collaboration of international lawyers catalyzing public interest innovation.  A non-profit program of the New York City Bar Association, we bring together leading law firms and other partners worldwide to pioneer international justice initiatives and provide pro bono legal representation to social justice NGOs.   

With a staff of 21, the Vance Center operates various programs (1) providing pro bono representation, in partnership with more than 170 law firms worldwide, to civil society and international organizations in the areas of the environment, human rights and access to justice, institutional integrity and public interest reporting, and (2) promoting diversity, pro bono practice, ethics, and public interest law education, particularly in the Latin American and sub-Saharan African legal professions.

The Institutional Integrity Program pursues transparency and integrity in government, supporting civil society, judicial independence, and intersecting efforts to hold officials and institutions accountable. Through this program, we collaborate with civil society organizations, promoting openness, transparency, and accountability.

The Position
The Institutional Integrity Program Advisor, reporting to the Vance Center Associate Executive Director, will work on initiatives to support judicial independence and integrity, and address corruption.

The main responsibilities of the Institutional Integrity Program Advisor will include, but not be limited to:
  • Conduct research and analysis on international public law and domestic laws;
  • Draft, review, and edit reports and background papers for publication;
  • Establish, develop, and maintain professional relationships with pro bono clients;
  • Coordinate and manage pro bono and grant-based projects;
  • Draft narrative programmatic reports to grantmakers;
  • Plan, organize, and participate in virtual and in-person events (roundtables, trainings, workshops, etc.), in the United States and abroad;
  • Travel in the U.S. and internationally to implement project activities;
  • Draft materials for publication on program activities, cases, or current events;
  • Participate in Vance Center team meetings and initiatives;
  • Undertake specific administrative duties related to programs.
Qualifications
  • J.D. or LLM from U.S. law school. Specialization in International or Comparative Law is highly desirable. A degree from a non-U.S. law school may substitute for a U.S. J.D. Admission to practice law in a US state or in another jurisdiction.
  • Previous employment (minimum 4 years) in civil society organization, law firm, pro bono legal clearinghouse, or similar organization in the U.S. or abroad.
  • Written and oral fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Strong external relationship-building with persuasive communication skills.
  • Well-developed understanding of political and socio-economic conditions and current issues internationally, with particular expertise in Latin America. Knowledge of judicial independence and corruption issues is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to gather, synthesize, analyze, and present qualitative and quantitative data in various formats and genres, with excellent writing skills.
  • Careful attention to detail, accuracy, and schedule.
  • Facility with formal and informal collaboration in internal and external teams
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work quickly and well under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong digital technology knowledge and skills.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Candidates for this position must be available for in-person work at our Midtown Manhattan office on a hybrid schedule, generally requiring 3 days of scheduled in-office work per week, with the balance of time being work-from-home. The hybrid schedule is subject to review and revision based on departmental needs.

Starting salary will be $70,000- $80,000 (based on experience).
