Job Title: Law Student Intern - Intake
Program: Support Team
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Status: Part-Time
Reports to: Support Team Manager
Schedule: Mon.– Fri.; Hours to be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.
                    Work outside of these hours may occasionally be required.

  

Position Summary
The Law Student Intern – Intake provides essential administrative and client intake support to the firm’s attorneys and staff. This non-paralegal position focuses on client intake, general office tasks, and non-legal research. The intern will conduct initial client interactions, ensure accurate data entry into the case management system, and collaborate with attorneys for follow-up. This position requires a compassionate, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental approach when working with clients, many of whom face sensitive legal issues. It is ideal for law students seeking practical legal experience in intake.


Essential Functions

  • Conduct client intake via phone, email, and in-person, ensuring accurate data collection and case management system entry.
  • Assist with client screening, determining initial eligibility for services while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Provide clients with appropriate referrals to legal and community resources based on their needs.
  • Schedule and coordinate client appointments with attorneys, ensuring timely follow-up.
  • Assist attorneys with non-legal administrative tasks, including document management, clerical support, and general office duties.
  • Provide legal information to callers via the Access and Visitation Hotline regarding parenting orders, conservatorship, child support, and related issues.
  • Educate and inform clients on the scope of services provided and refer them to appropriate resources if necessary.

Other Functions

  • Support organizing and preparing materials for legal workshops, client meetings, and internal staff meetings.
  • Perform general office tasks, such as answering phones, and handling mail.
  • Assist in gathering information required for reporting to grant funders.



Requirements

Location Requirements:

  • On-site Austin, TX office


 Competencies (Required)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Compassionate, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental approach in dealing with clients.

Competencies (Preferred)

  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn case management software (e.g., Lega l Server).
  • Experience using Adobe, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint.

Education and Experience (Required)

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school.
  • Prior experience in an office or customer service setting is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time.
  • Occasional bending, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or      otherwise move objects.

Other Functions

· Perform other duties as assigned. 


Experience (Preferred)

· Experience working with non-profit grant processes.

· Experience working with state and federal grants.


Physical Requirements

· Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time. 

· Occasional bending, squatting, and kneeling. 

· Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force as needed, at times to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
