At Lightfoot, Franklin & White, we are growing our legal team in Houston to handle a wide variety of impactful cases. As a Legal Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our litigation team, assisting attorneys and staff with all aspects of case management, discovery, filings, and trial preparation. This position is perfect for a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of legal procedures and a passion for delivering excellent work in a collaborative environment.

Job Requirement: This position requires you to work onsite in the office daily at 1885 St. James Place, Houston, TX 77056. This is not a remote or hybrid position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Case Management: Assist attorneys in organizing and managing both electronic and physical case files, tracking deadlines, and ensuring timely filing of all necessary documents.
  • Court Filings: Prepare, organize, and file legal documents in state and federal courts, as well as with administrative agencies. Monitor court calendars and ensure timely notifications of upcoming hearings and deadlines.
  • Subpoena Management: Prepare and coordinate subpoenas for witnesses, records, and evidence. Track responses and manage subpoena deadlines.
  • Discovery Support: Assist with the discovery process by preparing draft discovery requests, helping with document collection, and managing document production.
  • Document Preparation: Draft, format, and organize documents for depositions, hearings, motions, and discovery. Ensure compliance with court rules and jurisdictional guidelines.
  • Trial Support: Assist with trial preparation by maintaining trial notebooks, organizing exhibits, and coordinating logistics for trial attendance.
  • Client Communication: Communicate with clients, witnesses, and third parties to gather information, schedule meetings, and provide updates on case progress.
  • Expense Handling and Billing: Submit and maintain invoices for case-related expenses, and monitor billing hours.
  • Legal Compliance and Confidentiality: Stay up to date on legal regulations affecting cases, while handling sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion.
  • Administrative Duties: Assist with general administrative tasks as needed, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree, Associate's degree, or Certificate in legal studies, paralegal studies, or a related field.
  • Experience: Several years of experience in litigation, with a solid understanding of the litigation process from case initiation to post-trial procedures. Experience in commercial or civil defense litigation is highly desired.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Understanding of litigation procedures and court rules for Texas state and federal courts.
    • Proficient in drafting and formatting a variety of legal documents, including motions, discovery requests, and trial materials.
    • Experience with document collection, review, and production.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including legal correspondence and client interaction.
    • Exceptional organizational skills to manage case files, calendars, deadlines, and ensure the accuracy of legal documents.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Pro, ITimekeep, e-discovery tools, and document management software such as IManage.
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, adapting to new technologies and evolving legal processes.
    • Strong time management and problem-solving skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
