1.     Organizational Context



 


a.    Organizational Setting


 


The position is located in the Advanced Technology Applications Center (ATAC) of the Global Databases Division, Infrastructure and Platforms Sector. The Center is responsible for exploring new technologies essentially about artificial intelligence (AI), in the domain of Intellectual Property. Several AI-based applications have been developed by ATAC (using open source technologies) and are currently used in production in three areas (text/speech/image).  The area is now to extended to a fourth one:  Generative AI. 


 


Generative AI is an emerging field. ATAC has deployed an internal tool called WINGS (WIPO Internal Neural Generative System), currently available to all internal staff, and plans to continue improving the tool to make it more adequate to process WIPO data.


 


b.    Purpose Statement


 


The incumbent will work on WIPO's AI tools, especially WINGS, and contribute indirectly or directly to other existing applications (WIPO Translate, WIPO speech-to-text, image similarity, classification, etc.).


 


The incumbent will be especially responsible for contributing to the improvement of the quality of our Generative AI application in the context of WIPO. The incumbent will test various techniques to use LLM to provide WIPO colleagues with a Generative AI assistant that is tailored to WIPO data. The post is located at WIPO's headquarters in Geneva.


 


 


c.    Reporting Lines


 


The incumbent works under the supervision of the Senior Machine Learning Specialist of the Advanced Technology Applications Center (ATAC).


 


d.    Work Relations


 


The incumbent will work closely with other members of the Global Databases Division. Depending on the Generative AI project, the incumbent might work with other teams inside WIPO.


 



2.      Duties and Responsibilities



 


The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:


 


a.   Study the usage of RAG (Retrieval Augmented-Generation) for exploiting big collections of WIPO-specific data following the launch of WINGS.


 


b.   Gather and clean training data for creating a repository of documents to search when using RAG.


 


c.   Process a large number of documents\: create embeddings and use efficient vector search technologies.


 


d.   Help colleagues with getting access to LLMs and provide hints on the best techniques for their use case.


 


e.   As a member of the team, explore new AI technologies that can improve existing tools, and potential technologies that help at developing early prototypes demonstrating their quality and suitability.


 


f.    Work on defining metrics and isolate test and development data to carefully evaluate the quality of the tools.


 


g.   Evaluate, plan, and assist in overseeing the required IT developments (possibly outsourced), testing, deployments for successful proof of concepts and support the implementation of the targeted technology into IT components usable and maintainable by the Division.


 


h.   Perform other related tasks as required.


 


 


 



3.      Requirements



 


Education (Essential)


First-level university degree in Information Technology, Machine learning, Natural Language Processing, or related disciplines.


 


Education (Desirable)


Advanced university degree in Information Technology, Machine learning, Natural Language Processing, or related disciplines.


 


Experience (Essential)


At least three years of experience in IT, AI or related disciplines.


 


Experience in programming languages\: Python or Java and bash.


 


Experience (Desirable)


Experience in LLMs, Machine learning, machine translation, vector search and/or search engines.


 


Experience in Information Technology development or research fields.


 


Experience in working on Generative AI/Machine Learning projects.


 


Experience supporting the development of prototypes using AI models (e.g. open-source software and/or AI models).


 


Experience in Web/Internet technologies\: Gradio, Tomcat, JavaScript, Angular.js, CSS, HTML 5, etc.


 


Experience in vector search.


 


 


Language (Essential)


Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.


 


Language (Desirable)


Good knowledge of other UN official languages.


 


Job Related Competencies (Essential)


Ability to write user guide, administration documentation and reports in English.


 


Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge of deployment strategies\: dockerization, cloud servers, version control systems (SVN and/or GIT).

Knowledge of Unix-based systems like Ubuntu and Red Hat, including configuring and managing remote Unix servers through command-line interfaces.


 


Proven background in research (scientific publications).


 


Knowledge of international intellectual property.

5.      Information



 


Annual salary:


Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the September 2024 rate of 96.7%.

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
